Chen Wei, born on February 21, 1969, in Suining, Sichuan Province, is an online writer and a prominent human rights activist in Sichuan. He was among the first signatories of the “Charter 08” and, along with Liu Xianbin and Ouyang Yi, is known as one of the “Three Heroes of Suining.”
In 1989, he was imprisoned for one year in Qincheng Prison in Beijing for participating in the 1989 student movement and was expelled from his university; he was released in December 1990.
In 1991, while in Beijing, he secretly co-founded underground organizations such as the “Chinese Liberal Democratic Party” with Hu Shigen and others. He was arrested again for planning commemorative activities marking the third anniversary of the June 4th incident and sentenced by the authorities to five years in prison; During this period, he served his sentence at Qincheng Prison in Beijing and the First Prison of Sichuan Province; after his release, he continued to uphold human rights ideals and dedicated himself to rights defense work.
On February 21, 2011, he was criminally detained by Suining police for reposting information online calling for “Jasmine Revolution” gatherings; he was formally arrested on March 28.
On December 23, 2011, he was sentenced by the Suining City Court to nine years in prison and two years of deprivation of political rights on charges of “inciting subversion of state power”; he was released on February 20, 2020, after serving his full sentence.
He previously served his sentence at Jialing Prison in Nanchong, Sichuan Province.
